GRADUATE PROGRAM IN BIOENGINEERING

Master of Science and Doctor of Science

 


1. As a final paper for the Academic Master's, the student will be required to present a dissertation, which may be presented in the following ways(GUIDELINES FOR WRITING THE FINAL VERSION) :

a) Classic dissertation: prepared in the manner of the presentation rules established by UFSJ and/or ABNT;
 
b) Dissertation in the form of publication: presentation of a scientific article, the conclusive product of the research work carried out, accepted for publication in an indexed journal, national or foreign, and with its own editorial board. For the defense of the dissertation, proof of acceptance of the article by the Editor of the journal will be required. In this case, the student will organize the final paper with cover, extract, introduction, literature review, accepted article, general conclusions and bibliographic references. The article will be written in accordance with the norms of the journal to which it was submitted and the other parts of the dissertation, prepared in accordance with the presentation norms established by UFSJ and/or ABNT.
 
2. The Dissertation, in the classic or published form, will be defended before an Examining Board open to the public.
 
2.1. Only the student who has fulfilled all the requirements set forth in the Program Rules, as well as the additional ones established by the Board, can submit to the defense of the dissertation.
 
2.2. The final judgment of the Dissertation must be requested from the Board by the Advisor, upon request that may contain suggestions on the composition of the Examining Board and the date of defense of the final work, in agreement with the student.
 
2.3. The date for the defense of the work will be fixed by the Coordinator, within a maximum period of 30 (thirty) days, counted from the request for the judgment of the conclusion work and the documents required by the Collegiate have been received.
 
3. As a conclusion work for the Doctorate, the student will be required to present a thesis, with an original character, which may be presented in the following forms:
 
a) Classical thesis: elaborated according to the presentation rules established by the UFSJ and/or ABNT;
 
b) Thesis in the form of publication: presentation of three scientific articles, conclusive products of the research work carried out, accepted for publication in indexed journals, national or foreign, and with their own editorial board. For the defense of the thesis, proof of acceptance of the articles by the Editors of the journals will be required. In this case, the student will organize the final paper with cover, extract, introduction, literature review, accepted articles, general conclusions and bibliographic references. The articles will be written according to the norms of the journals to which they were submitted and the other parts of the thesis, prepared according to the presentation norms established by UFSJ and/or ABNT.
 
4. Thesis, in the classic or published form, will be defended before an Examining Board open to the public.
 
4.1. Only the student who has fulfilled all the requirements set forth in this Regulation, as well as the additional ones that have been established by the Collegiate, can submit to the defense of the thesis.
 
4.2. The final judgment of the Thesis must be requested from the Board by the Advisor, through a request that may contain suggestions on the composition of the Examining Board and the date of defense of the conclusion work, in agreement with the student.
 
4.3. The date for the defense of the work will be fixed by the Coordinator, within a maximum period of 30 (thirty) days, counted from the request for the judgment of the conclusion work and the documents required by the Collegiate have been received.
 
5. The Examining Board, approved by the Program Collegiate, will be composed, respectively, for master's and doctoral degrees, and at least 03 (three) to 05 (five) professionals of recognized competence, holders of the title of Doctor or Professor, including the advisor.
 
5.1. The Examining Board for Dissertation will be composed of the supervisor, plus 2 (two) professionals, with at least one professional external to the UFSJ faculty.
 
5.2. The Thesis Examining Board will be composed of the supervisor, the two co-supervisors, plus two professionals outside the UFSJ faculty.
 
5.3. One and two alternates from UFSJ will be designated, respectively for the Dissertation and Thesis, in the constitution of the Examining Board.
 
5.4. Once the Examining Board has been approved, the advisor will send a copy of the work to each examiner, as well as the normative and regimental provisions pertinent to the evaluation and judgment process.
 
5.5. The Examining Board will have a minimum period of 07 (seven) and a maximum of 30 (thirty) days to evaluate the conclusion work and formulate its argument.
 
5.6. In the event that the final paper does not present a defense condition until two days before the scheduled date, one (or more) member(s) of the panel may propose its postponement
 
6. After the oral and public defense, the members of the Examining Board will issue a final opinion of Approval, Approval conditioned to the incorporation of substantial changes, or of Disapproval.
 
6.1. The candidate who obtains this indication from the members of the Examining Board unanimously will be approved.
 
6.2. In the event that the Examining Board, even if the Dissertation/Thesis work is approved, suggests reformulations after its defense, it is up to the advisor to monitor the adjustments and delivery of the final version up to a maximum of three months after its defense.
 
6.3. In the event that the Examining Board requests the incorporation of substantial changes in the Dissertation/Thesis, approval will be conditioned, and the supervisor will be responsible for monitoring the corrections and delivery of the final printed version up to a maximum of three months after its defense to the Coordinator of the Program, who will send the documents for review and final approval by the Examining Board.
 
7. Once the Dissertation/Thesis is approved by the Examining Board, the Graduate Department will forward the graduation process to the Collegiate Coordinator, for proper approval, consisting of the following documents:
 
a) student request.
 
b) student's academic record, demonstrating his/her curricular completion;
 
c) curricular provisions to which the student is subject;
 
d) minutes of the public session for the defense of the Dissertation (Thesis), accompanied by the individual opinions of the Examining Board;
 
e) copy of the Dissertation/Thesis, in its definitive version.
 
7.1. The Program Board will review the documentation and, after approval, will authorize the graduation. It will then forward the process to PROPE for appropriate action.
 
8. The student whose Dissertation/Thesis is rejected will be dismissed from the Program or, at the discretion of the Board, will be allowed the opportunity to submit to a new trial, within a period of six months, respecting the deadline for completion of the course established in these Rules.
 
8.1. The request for a new opportunity to judge a Dissertation (Thesis) must be accompanied by the following documentation:
 
a) request from the interested party to the Collegiate Coordinator;
 
b) copy of the Dissertation (Thesis) rejected;
 
c) copy of the opinions of the members of the Examining Board;
 
d) preliminary work reformulation plan.
 
8.2. The student who fails the second defense will not be entitled to a new opportunity.
